Weatherproofing: The Reason Why the Canon 5D Mark III Lacks an Articulating LCD

Aside from the lack of 1080/60p and clean HDMI output, another area in which the Canon 5D Mark III didn’t satisfy the long standing public wishes was in its lack of an articulating LCD, something even 60D and T3i users currently enjoy. Well, it seems as though there might be some method behind the latter’s madness, as David Parry from Canon UK dished out some revealing information to the folks at Techrader.

The decision not to include an articulating LCD derives from the fact that weatherproofing standards needed to be maintained in regards to the 5D3. Parry indicated a flip-out screen would:

Affect the weatherproofing, and we feel that is more important… The majority of people asking for articulated screens are of course videographers, and most of those will use field monitors.

Parry continued to state that the current 3.2-inch, 1,040,000-dot screen is “adequate” for “most” 5D Mark III users…

Techrader’s interview also revealed more information regarding Canon’s thought process behind their new $3,500 beauty, including the camera giants reasoning to stick with a 22MP sensor and not opt to compete with the D800′s 36MP offering. Those details can be found HERE.
